So use that file naming convention of yours in a separate map/file BACKUP structure! Not on a volatile harddisk, but on non-volatile CD(-RW) or DVD(-RW). If you don't have a proper backup then, you'll be totally føcked. It's been known to crash, freeze and generally corrupt itself and the photos in its library (it happened to me twice different iMacs, different type crashes never succeeded in retrieving the lost libraries! They're gone forever!). If you need to correct that you'll have to 1) export all those pix from iPhoto to the desktop, 2) trash all those pix from iPhoto's library, quit and restart iPhoto, rename the pix on the desktop (with one of those renamers) and THEN import those pix into iPhoto. The original filenames will have registered in iPhoto's XML data file indefinitely. If you connect your camera to your Mac and let iPhoto import the pix 'automatically' you will be too late.
